The First Baptist Church of Turley, Oklahoma, organized South Lakewood Baptist Church on Sunday, May 17, 1955. The first pastor was Bro. A.J. Wall, who along with twelve charter members, led the church through her first building program and grew to support a pastor full time.
In September 1958, Bro. Vernon Lierly was called as a pastor. At this time, the church purchased its first parsonage. In 1964 the second story was added to the present educational building. During the eight years that Bro. Lierly was with the church, she doubled in every aspect.
In October 1966, Bro. Don Price moved on the field. In 1967 a new parsonage was purchased. In 1970 the present sanctuary was erected. In 1972 the church employed Muncy Harris as the first full-time minister of music and youth. In 1973 South Lakewood sponsored its first mission located in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, with Bro. Phil Pinkstaff serving as the first missionary. Bro. Earl Mooney was the second missionary in that field.
In April, 1979, Bro. Lee Tillman became pastor. In November 1979 Bro. Tillman went to Monterrey, Mexico to dedicate a church that South Lakewood built.
Bro. Gary Woodard began his pastorate at South Lakewood in February 1981. The Broken Arrow Mission became self -supporting as Florence Street Baptist Church and their total debt was paid off in April 1989. In July 1991, South Lakewood voted to become the sponsoring church for Calvary Baptist Assembly in Palmerston-North, New Zealand, where Bro. Gary Max was missionary pastor.
In 1992 a portion of the shopping center south of the main building was purchased. Phase I of our Claiming the Vision campaign resulted in the acquisition of additional space and renovation to provide a modern activity center in 1996. Phase II culminated in the doubling in size of the education facility and began in June 2000. The renovation was completed in June 2001, in time for our Homecoming celebrating 46 years. In addition, several residential properties adjacent to the Church property have been acquired over the years to make room for additional parking and future expansion.
Through God's rich blessings and the faithfulness of His Church we are well equipped for the calling that lies before us. In September 2002, South Lakewood began the FAITH Outreach program. Our vision and desire is to faithfully proclaim the saving gospel of Jesus Christ throughout the city of Tulsa. |
